More fire doors exposed as inadequate

Five suppliers have now been identified as failing to meet the requisite fire performance standard, despite the manufacturers’ claims. The Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government (MHCLG) began investigating the fire door industry after it was found that a glazed, composite fire door in Grenfell Tower manufactured by Manse Masterdor failed a 30 minute fire resistance test after approximately 15 minutes. Issues were subsequently identified with doors produced by Masterdor Limited (the successor business to Manse Masterdor). Investigations have continued and in the last few days doors from three more manufacturers have failed fire resistance testing when tested on both sides. The products which have failed government tests to date were glazed and unglazed doors supplied by Manse Masterdor and Masterdor Limited and glazed composite doors supplied by Specialist Building Products Limited, trading as Permadoor;

Based on earlier work done by Kier and WSP, among others, Suffolk county councillors had been advised that the bridges project, which is still in its planning stages, would cost £97m in total. But a recent internal review of costs has forecast that the total amount needed to complete the project could increase significantly. The project has therefore been put on hold pending a review by Jacobs, which is expected to report in September 2018. The original plan was that around three quarters of the £97m required would come from central government and the rest from Suffolk taxpayers. Unless additional funding from government can be secured, the additional money would have to come either from Suffolk businesses or council taxpayers. Suffolk County Council leader Matthew Hicks said: “Since becoming leader, I have asked my senior team to review the major infrastructure projects Suffolk County Council is working on. Auditor gives Queensferry Crossing clean bill of health

The official audit of the project found that construction of the £1.34bn Queensferry Crossing was managed effectively. The bridge was built by Forth Crossing Bridge Constructors (FCBC), a consortium of Hochtief, Dragados, American Bridge and Morrison Construction (Galliford Try). It opened to traffic on 7th September 2017. Overall the project took around 10 years to complete. The Queensferry  Crossing is the tallest bridge in the UK and the longest three-tower cable-stayed bridge in the world. It is intended to have a useful life of at least 120 years. The audit report praises Transport Scotland’s budgeting, governance, quality assurance and risk management – as well as the competitive tendering which helped deliver the project under budget. The final cost of the project was £1.34bn was in the range of 8% to 16% less than the £1.45bn to £1.6bn estimated at the start of construction A key factor behind the project’s success was that the delivery team had the right mix of skills and experience, the report says.

DEWA reveals $3bn programme to add 91 electricity stations and substations

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has committed to a huge building programme which will greatly increase its electricity capacity. Costing around $3bn in total, some 91 stations and substations will be built across the emirate, adding to the 252 already in existence. DEWA expects the project to last around three years. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, commented: “DEWA’s necessary investments total AED 81bn ($22bn) over the next five years. In 2017, 21 400kV substations were completed, with 1,150km of ground cables. “We aim to support and upgrade the capacity and efficiency of the transmission networks by providing a distinctive infrastructure and service facilities, to meet the sustainable development needs of Dubai, and provide electricity and water services according to the highest standards of availability, reliability and efficiency.”

Foxconn awards 35+ contracts for $10bn ‘megafactory’

Foxconn has awarded contracts to 37 companies to help construct its the Multipurpose Building at the Wisconn Valley Science and Technology Park campus in Mount Pleasant. The Multipurpose Building is a 120,000 square feet facility and the first building being constructed on the Foxconn campus, which has been dubbed a ‘megafactory’. The structure will serve as office space for construction companies involved in the building of the Wisconn Valley Science and Technology Park. It will also house research and development facilities focusing on advanced display technology and applications in all aspects of smart lives. It will contribute to the development of the AI 8K+5G ecosystem that Foxconn is building across the Badger State. “Today’s announcement reflects Foxconn’s continued commitment to a ‘Wisconsin First’ plan by working with companies all across the State,” said Dr. Louis Woo, Special Assistant to Foxconn Founder and CEO Terry Gou.

UK’s Crossrail project edges closer to completion, budget increased to £15.4bn

Crossrail, the major rail project that is set to revolutionise travel in London, is ‘93% complete’ according to the government’s latest update. The east-to-west line has entered the critical testing and commissioning phase with an extra £600mn added to its completion budget, the UK’s Rail Miniser Jo Johnson said in a written statement to parliament. With all core infrastructure components completed in the summer of 2017, the additional funding – which takes the project’s complete budget up to £15.4bn – will be divided between Crossrail Limited and Network Rail. £300mn is being made available to Crossrail Limited, with the Department for Transport and TfL contributing £150mn each. Around £290mn is being provided for completion of the programme of works on the national rail network, and is being funded by the Department for Transport and Network Rail.

Nakheel and Centara award $80mn contract for Dubai hospitality venture

Nakheel and Centara have awarded a key $80mn contract as part of their joint venture to build a major resort in Dubai’s Deira Islands. Parkway International Contracting LLC will deliver the 601-room hotel and waterpark complex by the end of 2020 as part of the government’s push to develop a broader range of four-star accommodation. The build represents a first UAE project for Centara, a Thailand-based hotels company which entered the Middle East market with the opening of Centara Muscat Hotel in 2017. Nakheel’s partnership with Centara is the developer’s second international joint venture at Deira Islands. Construction of the first, an 800-room, beachfront resort with Spain’s RIU Hotels & Resorts, is under underway, with anticipated completion also in 2020. “Nakheel continues to play a pivotal role in shaping and diversifying Dubai’s tourism offering with a retail expansion that supports the government’s vision,” said Chairman Ali Rashid Lootah.

Taipei development $437mn metro line contract awarded, but will 20,000 homes be completed on time

This week it has been announced that the contract to develop Taipei’s new metro line, worth $437mn, has been awarded to UK engineering company Alstom as well as Taiwanese engineering services provider, CITC. However, as the city of Taipei continues to develop, attention has been drawn to the Mayor’s goal of building at least 20,000 public housing units and whether this will be reached. Alstom, CITC to develop first phase of Metro Line 7: Alstom has been awarded the contract for supplying an integrated metro system for Taipei’s Metro Line 7 phase one, alongside CITC. Alstom’s share of the total contract is set to be worth around $260mn. The contract was awarded by the Systemwide E&M Project Office (SEMPO).

Almost 80% of builders are calling for more regulation in the construction industry to end the tyranny of cowboy builders, according to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).

The FMB is calling on the Government to introduce a licensing scheme in construction as part of its new Agenda ‘Raising the bar: A post-Grenfell agenda for quality and professionalism in construction’.

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “Until we introduce a licensing scheme in construction, cowboy builders will continue to run rampant in our industry. Licensing would ensure a minimum level of competence and professionalism and give consumers greater assurance when hiring a builder. Unlike in the US and Germany, anyone can be a builder in the UK.

TfL set to begin CS11 construction in July

Transport for London has announced that work will begin to build Cycle Superhighway 11 (CS11) at Swiss Cottage in mid-July, the first section of a new route that will enable safer cycling to the West End. The new cycle route at Swiss Cottage will include the removal of the gyratory system, a new public space on Avenue Road and new pedestrian crossings. The gyratory will be removed and two-way working introduced on Finchley Road and Adelaide Road. Avenue Road between College Crescent and Adelaide Road will become bus and cycle only with a stepped cycle track, creating a new public space. The transformation of Swiss Cottage is expected to be complete in September 2019 and comprehensive travel advice for all modes will be published at the end of the month.
